taconear is derived from stage music that was commissioned by flamenco dancer Paula Comitre in June 2023. Together we created a choreographic and musical work, a sort of flamenco ballet, one might say, entitled Après vous, Madame. It is a tribute to the famous dancer Antonia Mercè, known as La Argentina, one of the key figures in the spread and popularisation of 'neo-classical' flamenco outside the Iberian Peninsula in the early 20th century. By drawing on their music, she also revitalised the presence of contemporary Spanish composers (Albeniz, Granados, de Falla...) and commissioned works from the younger generation (Nin, Halffter...). It seems only logical, therefore, that this repertoire should be invoked. We still have a few audio recordings of La Argentina's dance. A precise rhythmic transcription of her playing of the castañuelas served as a reservoir of elements from which to search for an agogic unity. A spectrographic analysis of these sounds, as well as those produced by her heels (taconear), revealed an unexpected wealth of timbres, probably due to minute variations in the angle and speed of each impact. 

These sounds were reproduced by preparing the piano with neodymium magnets in various places, rubber strips and adhesive paste. Throughout the piece, the harsh world of jondo is explored. The first section evokes Manuel de Falla's Serenata Andaluza, initially in the form of a cante patrás (song for the bailaora), which transforms into an escobilla (rhythmic episode). A second section refers to Joaquín Nin's Danza Ibérica, incorporating a querío (lament) between another escobilla and a kind of toccata. After the tolling of a knell, the piece closes with an allusion to La Farruca, a traditional song, and trails off like a tablao that had to be interrupted.

Nous avons donc construit et créé ensemble une œuvre chorégraphique et musicale, une sorte de ballet flamenco pourrait-on dire, intitulé Après vous, Madame. Il s'agit d'une révérence envers la célèbre danseuse Antonia Mercè, connue sous le nom de La Argentina, une des personnalités fondamentales vis-à-vis de la diffusion et de la popularisation du flamenco "néo-classique" en dehors de la péninsule ibérique au début du XXème siècle. En s'appuyant sur leur musique, elle avait également vitalisé la présence des compositeurs espagnols contemporains (Albeniz, Granados, de Falla...) et passa commande à la jeune génération (Nin, Halffter...). Il semblait donc logique d'invoquer ce répertoire. Il nous subsiste quelques enregistrements audio de la danse de La Argentina. Un relevé rythmique précis de son jeu de castañuelas a servi de réservoir d'éléments pour chercher une unité agogique. Une analyse spectrographique de ces sons, ainsi que de ceux produits par ses talons (taconear), révèle une richesse inattendue de timbres, probablement selon d'infimes variations de l'angle et de la vitesse de chaque impact. Une approximation de ces sons fut réalisée par la préparation du piano avec des aimants en néodyme placés à divers endroits, des languettes de caoutchouc et de la pâte adhésive. Tout le long de la pièce, l'univers sévère du jondo est exploré. Une première section évoque la Serenata Andaluza de Manuel de Falla, d'abord sous la forme d'un cante patrás (chant au service de la bailaora), qui se métamorphose en escobilla (épisode rythmique). Une seconde section se réfère à la Danza Ibérica de Joaquín Nin, intégrant un querío (lamentation) entre une autre escobilla et une espèce de toccata. Après un glas, la pièce se ferme sur une allusion envers La Farruca, une chanson traditionnelle, et se suspend à la manière d'un tablao qu'il fallait interrompre.

Das Stück „taconear” ist von einer Schauspielmusik abgeleitet, das die Flamencotänzerin Paula Comitre im Juni 2023 bei mir bestellt hatte. Wir haben also gemeinsam ein choreografisches und musikalisches Werk - eine Art Flamenco-Ballett könnte man sagen - mit dem Titel „Après vous, Madame” aufgebaut und uraufgeführt. Es ist eine Reverenz/Verbeugung an die berühmte Tänzerin Antonia Mercè, bekannt als „La Argentina", eine der wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten, die den  „neoklassischen" Flamenco außerhalb der iberischen Halbinsel zu Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts bekannt und populär gemacht hat.

Durch die Nutzung der Musik zeitgenössischer spanischer Komponisten (Albeniz, Granados, de Falla...) und die Bestellung von Werken der jüngeren Generation (Joaquin Nin, Ernesto Halffter...) hatte sie auch die Präsenz dieser Komponisten gestärkt. Es war deshalb logische Konsequenz, dieses Repertoire heranzuziehen. Uns sind einige Audioaufnahmen des Tanzes von „La Argentina” erhalten geblieben. Eine genaue rhythmische Aufzeichnung ihres Castañuela-Spiels diente als Repertoire von Elementen für die Suche nach einer homogenen Klangfarbe. Eine spektrographische Analyse dieser Klänge sowie der Klänge, die von ihren Stöckelschuhen (taconear) produziert wurden, zeigte einen unerwarteten Reichtum an Klangfarben, der wahrscheinlich von kleinsten Variationen des Winkels und der Geschwindigkeit jeden Schlages kommt.

Eine Annäherung an diese Klänge wurde durch die Präparation des Klaviers mit an verschiedenen Stellen platzierten Neodym-Magneten, Gummi-Zungen und Klebepads realisiert. Während des gesamten Stücks wird die strenge Welt des Jondo untersucht. Ein erster Teil erinnert an die „Serenata Andaluza” von Manuel de Falla, zunächst in Form eines Cante Patrás (Gesang im Dienste der Bailaora), der sich in eine Escobilla (rhythmische Episode) verwandelt. Ein zweiter Abschnitt bezieht sich auf Joaquín Nins „Danza Ibérica”, indem ein Querío (Klage) zwischen einer weiteren Escobilla und einer Art Toccata integriert wird. Nach dem Schall/Klang einer versinkenden Todesglocke schließt das Stück mit einer Reverenz an „La Farruca”, ein traditionelles Lied, und hängt in der Luft wie ein Tablao, das unterbrochen werden muss.

Originally conceived to accompany a famous scene from Max Linder's silent film Seven Years Bad Luck, this charming rhapsody alternates mischievous scherzi, strange waltzes and eloquent recitatives.

It was first performed at the Paris CRR.

This monologue for baritone saxophone was composed a year after the UK’s exit from the EU’s internal common market, and conveys a feeling of alienation. Its structure follows the form of variations on the British anthem , God save the King/ Queen, albeit in such a way that one only recognises the tune’s contours at the very end. This is also a persistent and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to sing this anthem: the strangeness of the geopolitical situation may have caused here an originary repression (Urverdrängung) of this national symbol, which is so often blindly brandished that it would have lost its meaning.

Élaborée un an après la sortie du Royaume-Uni du marché commun intérieur de l’Union Européenne, ce monologue pour saxophone baryton traduit un certain sentiment d’aliénation. La structure est en forme de variations sur God save the King/Queen, l’hymne britannique, cependant de telle sorte que l’on n’en reconnaisse les contours qu’à la toute fin. C’est aussi la tent ative répétée et vouée à l’échec d’entonner cet hymne : l’étrangeté de cette situation géopolitique causerait un refoulement originaire (Urverdrängung) de ce symbole national, si souvent aveuglément brandi qu’on en aurait perdu la signification.

The title of this work refers to Das Nasobēm, a short wistful poem from Christian Morgenstern's Galgenlieder, itself referring to Edward Lear's The Dong with a luminous Nose. A sort of melancholy, the dreadful feeling of an inescapable fate, exude from this nonsense poetry, in which neologisms abound, yet the story doesn't make any sense.

Nasobēmen seems rhapsodic at first glance, but it combines Variations with Sonata-form. The various musical elements and episodes perpetually merge into each other, giving an impression of continuous metamorphosis.

The meaning and character is deliberately open, in such a way that the listener may imagine and project his or her own narrative. A certain strangeness that constantly clings around, such as an abandoned house's humid odor, gives this piece a dreamlike quality and the sensation of floating in otherworldly realms.

The harmonic language strikes a balance between tonal structure and dissonant overtones, thusly building a mysterious and disturbing yet familiar and numbing world. 

Premiered in August 2021 by Trio Dämmerung at the Festival International de Musique de Chambre de Salon-de-Provence.

Le titre de cette œuvre fait allusion au texte Das Nasobēm extrait du recueil Galgenlieder de Christian Morgenstern, lui-même inspiré du texte The Dong with a luminous Nose du britannique Edward Lear. Les différentes péripéties musicales se fondent les unes dans les autres, donnant l'impression d'une métamorphose continue. 

Le sens de ces épisodes est volontairement ouvert pour laisser la possibilité à l'auditeur d'imaginer et d'y projeter son propre récit. Une certaine étrangeté constante confère à cette pièce un registre onirique, la sensation de flotter dans le monde du rêve.

Le langage musical cherche un équilibre entre une base tonale et un enrichissement grinçant qui procure une sensation d'étrangeté permanente, un univers mystérieux et inquiétant bien que familier.

Cette œuvre pour saxophone alto, violon et piano est composée en 2021 pour le trio Dämmerung, elle est créée au festival de musique de chambre de Salon-de-Provence.

Currently scored for four opera singers, choir, narrator and piano, this lyrical work alternates newly-written music with more-or-less-distorted extracts from the classical opera repertoire. A crowd of barbarians discover Western society and culture through an encounter with the world of opera. They are guided by an offstage narrator who takes on the role of a cultural guru, who creates a rift among the Barbarians, converting some into fundamentalist missionaries of this culture, and pushing the others to become refractory and resistant.

The variety in metamorphosis of the musical material taken from the world of opera suggest how neophytes may perceive differently this music. It was premiered in March 2020 at the Pavillon de Romainville in a work-in-progress version, and then in its final version in June 2021.

The librettist and scenographer is Nicolas Slawny.

Dans sa version pour quatre chanteurs lyriques, choeurs, narrateur, et piano, cet ouvrage lyrique alterne musique originale et extraits plus ou moins déformés du grand répertoire lyrique. Un peuple de barbares découvre la société et la culture occidentales par une rencontre avec le monde de l'opéra. Guidés par un narrateur en voix off qui prend le rôle d'un gourou de la culture, qui crée un clivage parmi les Barbares, convertissant certains en missionnaires intégristes de cette culture, et poussant les autres à devenir des réfractaires et des résistants.

Veisalgia is a short character piece, in the tradition of 19th-century salon music, apart that the feeling conveyed is veisalgia, commonly known as a 'hangover'.

The second movement is a rather solemn and sombre Passacaglia built upon an dodecaphonic basso ostinato. The third movement is a mischievous and seemingly-clumsy canonical Scherzo. The fourth movement is a Barcarolle, a character-piece denomination barely concealing the classical structure of a theme and variations. The theme is a setting of one of Christian Morgenstern's Galgenlieder ; the cellist may choose to play it or to sing it. The final movement, a tribute to Paul Celan's poem Todesfuge, transforms the passacaglia's basso ostinato into the subject for a furious fugue.

It was premiered in its final form by Guy Danel, and in its earlier forms by Polina Streltsova. 

Les cinq mouvements de cette Sonate ont été composées le long de quatre années consécutives, sur la base d'un même matériau musical original.

Elle s'ouvre sur un Prologue qui anticipe tous les thèmes développés dans le reste de cette Sonate, avec une couleur un peu mélancolique, donnant à l'auditeur l'impression de regretter une musique qu'il n'a pas encore entendue, une sorte de réminiscence par anticipation. Le second mouvement est une Passacaille assez sombre construite à partir d'une basse obstinée dodécaphonique. Le troisième mouvement est un Scherzo canonique espiègle et biscornu. Le quatrième mouvement prend les allures d'une Barcarolle, cachant à peine un thème et variations. Le thème est une mise en musique d'un Galgenlied de Christian Morgenstern, que le ou la violoncelliste a la possibilité de chanter à la place de le jouer. Le mouvement final reprend la basse obstinée du second mouvement et la transforme en une furieuse fugue, un hommage au poème Todesfuge de Paul Celan.

This piece for piano is derived from the composer’s own lyrical farce, entitled Un Barbare à l’Opéra (A Barbarian at the Opera), a collaboration with dramaturgist Nicolas Slawny and the Opéra Apéro company. It wanders freely from one famous opera fragment to another, virtuosic, con brio and somewhat superficial, as one might expect this kind of paraphrase to be. However, the overall tone is sarcastic, as a result of which the well-known operatic quotes undergo a metamorphosis, turning into caricature. For the composer himself, this work is also a kind of therapy, thanks to which he can recover from the trauma caused by performing at countless opera galas for high society.

Cette pièce pour piano est tirée de la Farce Lyrique « Un Barbare à l’Opéra », en collaboration avec Nicolas Slawny et la compagnie Opéra Apéro. Il s’agit d’un parcours d’extraits célèbres d’opéra, avec de la virtuosité, du brio, des étincelles, et une certaine superficialité, attendue pour ce genre de paraphrase. En revanche, elle est abordée avec un ton sardonique, de telle sorte que ces extraits deviennent des métamorphoses, tournant à la caricature. Pour le compositeur, il s’agit également d’une thérapie pour soigner le traumatisme généré par de trop nombreuses soirées mondaines « Gala d’Opéra » qu’il lui fallut accompagner.

This very demanding piece uses the entire range of the four saxophones (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone), and pushes the performers' endurance to the limit. The mostly homorhythmic writing generates a form of meta-instrument that sounds like digitally-generated electronic music.

Dramaturgically speaking, this piece represents the ten agonising final minutes a heart-attack victim may endure.

It was commissioned by the Gaman Ensemble.

As in Schönberg's Second String Quartet, this Trio features a female singer in the last movement, and sets to music one of the Roman Empire's earliest famous poetry. An Eglogue, chosen among Virgil's Bucolics, at first glance evokes the languid love of the solitary shepherd Corydon waiting in vain for Amyntas, whom he desires ; however it also explores the complex psychology of a somewhat narcissistic character embroiled with his patrons, his art, aesthetic considerations and politics, as well as his lovers, whilst showcasing a richly colourful mastery of the Latin language.

The first two movements are purely instrumental, and paint different aspects of this psychological portrait. The last movement is more narrative, the instrumental group imitates the aulos and cymbalum of an Aed unfolding his poetics, who eventually gets carried away by his own tale.

This Trio was premiered at the Salle Cortot in February 2019.

A l'instar du Deuxième quatuor à cordes de Schönberg, ce trio fait intervenir une cantatrice pour le dernier mouvement, pour interpréter une mise en musique de l'un des premiers textes poétiques de l'Empire Romain. Il s'agit d'une églogue de Virgile choisie parmi le recueil des Bucoliques, qui, sous prétexte d'évoquer la langueur amoureuse du berger solitaire Corydon attendant en vain Amyntas, objet de son désir, explore une psychologie complexe plus narcissique et esthète qu'à première apparence, tout en déployant une langue latine riche et colorée. Les deux premiers mouvements, purement instrumentaux, dressent différents aspects de ce portrait psychologique. Le dernier mouvement présente un aspect plus narratif, le groupe instrumental représente l'aulos et la cithare d'un aède déroulant sa poétique, et qui se prend au jeu de sa propre dramaturgie.

The Ironies are a collection of 13 short works for piano composed in the summer of 2018. This set of aesthetically diverse pieces, combining extended tonality with atonality, owes its coherence to an underlying major-minor duality, conveying to the whole cycle a somewhat bittersweet flavour. The title Ironies reflects this ambiguity, underlining a certain light-hearted humour. Some chords recur throughout the entire work: C-G-A-E, that opens and closes the cycle, often plays the role of a tolling bell, muffled like a funeral toll or radiant like a set of chimes.

The first Irony is a passacaglia, densely building up layers until suddenly evaporating into a peculiar peal of bells. The second is rhythmically constructed from the digits of the number π, the structure is generated by the occurrences of zero, and the harmonic and melodic elements are connected through axial symmetry around B raised by a quarter tone, a note that doesn't exist on the piano keyboard. The third is a cradle-song, where the soothing rocking motion slows down with the onset of sleep. This swinging motion permeates the fourth Irony, with features characteristic of the barcarolle, navigating more turbulent waters than its serene beginning suggests. The joyfully nervous fifth Irony takes the shape of a scherzo, alternating cheeky playfulness with enigmatic lyricism. The sixth, close to improvisation, does not follow any traditional form, yet its chaotic state of mind exudes calm. The seventh emulates a tender impromptu, albeit sometimes sounding like a lopsided minuet. The eighth and ninth tell a tale of gastronomy, enclosed in two episodes, in which an almost pathological carelessness in the pleasures of the table precedes the inevitable indigestion of the guest. The tenth is a simple, somewhat candid reverie. The eleventh and twelfth form a second diptych, a pair of perpetuum mobile: while one revolves around a minor second interval in a chaotic rhythmical framework, the other seems to be obsessed by the major second, set in a malambo›s particularly predictable bar structure. A majestic crowning piece to the Ironies, the Sarabande Funèbre finally reestablishes the serenity from the opening bars of the cycle, after withstanding the violent struggle of an unavoidable chapter of grief.

Les Ironies pour piano sont un cycle de 13 courtes pièces pour piano, composées durant l’été 2018. L’ensemble des pièces, malgré la variété de leur esthétique, dans un langage alliant la tonalité étendue à l’atonalité en passant par divers systèmes, est unifié par une ambiguïté majeur-mineur, ou plutôt de mineur dans le majeur, plus ou moins marquée, donnant une saveur quelque peu aigre-douce à l’ensemble. De cette ambiguïté et un humour quelque peu sarcastique est venu le titre du cycle. Il faut noter la récurrence de certains accords, en particulier do-sol-la-mi, qui ponctue tout le cycle, l’initie et le termine, souvent utilisé comme une cloche, parfois sourde comme un glas, ou brillante comme un carillon.

La première Ironie est une passacaille, se chargeant de plus en plus jusqu’à se liquider en volée de cloches. La deuxième est construite à partir de la séquence de décimales du nombre π, en utilisant la fréquence des occurrences du zéro pour construire des phrases musicales, le tout lié par une symétrie autour d’une note n’existant pas au piano : le si un quart dièse. La troisième est une berceuse, dont le balancement devient de plus en plus irrégulier, le sommeil venant au fur et à mesure. On retrouve ce balancement dans la quatrième aux allures d’une barcarolle, sur un fleuve plus agité que le début ne laisse transparaître. Les contours deviennent plus nerveux et espiègles dans la cinquième aux allures d’un scherzo. La sixième Ironie, plus improvisée, ne correspond à aucune forme traditionnelle, mais reste sereine dans son propre chaos. La septième émule un tendre impromptu prenant les contours d’un menuet bancal. La huitième et la neuvième narrent deux pendants du monde de la restauration (alimentaire), d’abord l’activité foisonnante presque pathologique en cuisine suivie de l’indigestion inévitable du client. La dixième est une simple et naïve rêverie. Les onzième et douzième forment un second diptyque, chacun d’eux abusant de l’intervalle de seconde en mouvement perpétuel, la seconde mineure dans un rythme désorganisé dans un premier temps, puis la seconde majeure dans le rythme trop organisé d’un Malambo. Pour finir, une sarabande funèbre permet d’achever le cycle avec noblesse dans la sérénité de son ouverture, après la violence déchirante d’un nécessaire épisode de deuil.

Ironies ist eine Sammlung, die eine Reihe 13 kurzer Klavierstücke enthält, die im Sommer 2018 komponiert wurden. Die Ästhetik jedes einzelnen Stücks ist vielfältig: Tonalität ist mit Atonalismus kombiniert. Ein unterliegender Dur-Moll-Dualismus während des ganzen Werkes vermittelt das Gefühl von Einheit und gibt einen bittersüßen Nachgeschmack.

Der Titel Ironies zeigt diese Ambiguität und unterstreicht den Humor, der inmitten einer ernsten Atmosphäre liegt. Einige Akkorde ziehen sich wie ein roter Faden durch das ganze Werk, hauptsächlich C-G-A-E. Diese Harmonie öffnet und verschlüsselt die gesamte Reihe, erscheint häufig wie Glockenklang. Es klingt manchmal gedämpft und tief wie Glocken bei einem Begräbnis, oder glänzend wie ein Glockenspiel.

Die erste Ironie ist eine Passacaglia, die eine immer dichter werdende Textur aufbaut, bis sie plötzlich verschwindet und sich in einem seltsamen Glockengeläut verläuft. Die rhythmische Struktur der zweiten Ironie stammt aus den Ziffern der Nummer π, ihre musikalischen Sätze atmen mit den Intervallen der Zahl Null und die harmonischen und melodischen Elemente sind durch eine symmetrische Achse verbunden (Das eine Ende der Achse findet sich beim H, das ein Viertelton höher ist, d.h. auf einer Note, die man nicht auf der Klaviatur findet). Die dritte ist ein Wiegenlied, in dem die beruhigende Bewegung mit dem Beginn des Schlafes allmählich langsamer wird. Diese schwankende Bewegung findet man auch in der vierten Ironie, die in der Art einer Barcarolle umgesetzt ist, die nach einem entspannten Anfang in unruhige Gewässer navigiert.

Die freudige und aufgeregte fünfte Ironie nimmt die Züge eines Scherzos an und alterniert zwischen frecher Spielfreude und geheimnisvoller Lyrik. Die sechste Ironie, ähnlich einer Improvisation, folgt keiner etablierten Struktur, die trotz ihrer hektischen Geisteshaltung Ruhe verströmt. Die siebte Ironie kommt einer zarten Impromptu nahe, obwohl es (manchmal)/gelegentlich(hin und wieder) wie ein schräges Menuett klingt. Die achte und neunte Ironie erzählt in zwei Episoden ein gastronomisches Märchen: Zuerst hört/vernimmt man die unvorsichtige blitzschnelle Vorbereitung zahlreicher Mahlzeiten, und danach können wir die unvermeidlichen Verdauungsbeschwerden des Gasts geniessen. Die zehnte Ironie ist eine leichte und ziemlich freimütige Träumerei. Die elfte und zwölfte Ironie ist als Paar zu betrachten und bildet zusammen ein zweites Diptychon als Perpetuum Mobile: Die erste entwickelt ein Halbton-Motiv durch chaotische Rhythmen, die zweite fokussiert sich auf ein Ganzton-Motiv, ähnlich/gleichsam/entsprechend eines Malambo mit ziemlich vorhersehbarer Takt-Struktur. Als majestätische Krönung der Ironien, bringt die Sarabande Funèbre schließlich die Heiterkeit der ersten Takte des Zyklus wieder zurück, nachdem sie den gewaltigen Kampf eines unvermeidlichen Kapitels von Trauer überlebt hat.

Cet ouvrage est conçu pour voix d'enfants, clarinette, alto et percussion. Suivant le principe des récits emboîtés de Shéhérazade, l'histoire commence et se termine dans une banlieue populaire parisienne, tandis que l'on s'échappe en orient dans d'absurdes et rocambolesques histoires. Il fut créé au Théâtre au fil de l'eau à Pantin, en juin 2019.

Il s'agit une commande de Marc-Olivier Dupin et du Grand Mélange.

My friend Fabien Touchard gifted me with a tibetan singing bowl in summer 2018, when I was hopelessly searching for compositional ideas for a piece for two harpsichords which was due in september 2018. The harmonic material for this piece was derived from a swift and basic spectral analysis of this bowl, which had the peculiarity of ringing a very clear slightly large tritone. In the original version, the bowl was kept on stage and struck by the harpsichordists during the piece. 
In this revised version, the bowl has disappeared, but one can imagine it's sound as it has left a certain footprint, a shadow in the music.
Lude is both a Prelude (in the spirit of Louis Couperin's harpsichord music), an unsatisfying Postlude (as always a conclusion that never really ends), and what could go in between. Hence Lude. 
One can hear a sort of suite, not of dances, but of Inventions.

Le projet initial consistait à écrire une pièce pour deux clavecins à la manière des Préludes-non-mesurés les plus développés de Louis Couperin, avec une section centrale plus dansée et contrapuntique, encadrée par une écriture libre où seules les notes sont indiquées et les rythmes sont à la guise de l'interprète, mais dans un langage moderne et personnel. Au fur et à mesure de l'élaboration de Lude, les parties contrapuntiques se sont multipliées, et les parties libres se sont structurées et diversifiées, de telle sorte que cette oeuvre devienne un hommage moderne et lumineux envers la richesse et la variété de la musique baroque.

Cette oeuvre fut créée au Festival l'Esprit des Pierres.

This short and somewhat rhapsodic piece is based on Brahms' famous Klavierstück Op.118 n.3, and is the first installment of a series of pieces based on the same compositional principle. The concept of "Veränderung", loosely translated as "metamorphosis", is rendered through the transformation of Brahms' original piano piece, albeit rigorously following its structure and the shape of the different melodic motifs, but in such a way as it is barely recognisable. Starting with a free cadenza, the main theme gradually builds up in a distorted manner developing into a small Samba-like conclusion. The middle section converts Brahms' original sweetness into a bizarre "broken toy-like" worrying atmosphere, followed by a recapitulation of the opening section, and then ending with a coda that "lies in ruins". 

The aim of this piece is to give a picture of what Brahms' music could sound like, had he lived through the horrors of the first half of the 20th century, a withering faint echo of lyrical romanticism lying in a shattered post-industrial world.

This piece is written for Nicolas Arsenijevic, and premiered at the Zagreb International Saxophone Congress.

Cette courte pièce d'apparence rhapsodique est construite à partir du célèbre Klavierstück Op.118 n.3 de Brahms, et constitue le premier volet d'une série d'œuvres basées sur un même principe compositionnel. Le concept de "Veränderung", qui peut se traduire par "métamorphose", est rendu par la transformation de la pièce originale pour piano de Brahms, en respectant rigoureusement sa structure et le contour des différents motifs mélodiques, mais de manière à ce qu'elle soit à peine reconnaissable. Commençant par une cadence libre, le thème principal se construit progressivement de manière dégingandée pour aboutir à une première conclusion aux allures de samba. La section médiane transforme la douceur originelle du Klavierstück en une atmosphère bizarre et inquiétante, évoquant la démarche boiteuse d'un jouet cassé, suivie d'une récapitulation verbatim de la section d'ouverture, avant de conclure par une coda qui "gît en ruines", à la Schnittke.

Le but de cette pièce est de donner une image de ce à quoi la musique de Brahms aurait pu ressembler, s'il avait vécu les horreurs de la première moitié du 20e siècle, un faible écho flétri du romantisme lyrique dans un monde post-industriel délabré.

The characters melt into each other through anamorphosis, a grotesque 'ma serioso' scherzo transforms into a frantic ragtime that mixes be-bop elements and Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptue. Each section seems to lose control in some way, as if a race-car were handed to a novice driver.

The Cadenza for solo saxophone abruptly alternates serene lyricism with virtuoso, quasi-robotic runs.

The closing piece is a metamorphosis on Kurt Weill's song Youkali. The structure of the melody is scrupulously maintained, but the musical content is completely transformed, so that one may only perceive snatches of the original motifs at first. Later a few melodic outlines appear more clearly, and even an exact quotation at the end, that gradually deconstructs into silence, alluding to the utopian world evoked in the lyrics. It is also a tribute to Kurt Weill's symphonic works, a harsher and more intellectual world than his better-known cabaret music, but not without a similarly sharp sardonicism.

Le premier formant est une fresque d'atmosphères différentes, prenant comme point de départ et d'arrivée le doux balancement aquatique d'une Barcarolle, baigné par d'étranges harmonies. Les caractères glissent l'un vers l'autre par anamorphose, et on entend un scherzo grotesque, "ma serioso", un ragtime effréné qui mélange be-bop et la Fantaisie-Impromptue de Chopin. Chaque section semble perdre le contrôle d'une façon ou d'une autre, comme si l'on donnait une voiture de course à un conducteur débutant.

La Cadence pour saxophone solo alterne brutalement un lyrisme serein avec de virtuoses envolées quasi-électroniques.

Le dernier formant est une métamorphose de la chanson Youkali de Kurt Weill. La structure de la mélodie est respectée scrupuleusement, mais le contenu musical est complètement transformé, de telle sorte que l'on perçoit d'abord des bribes des motifs originaux, puis l'on reconnaît quelques contours mélodiques, et enfin une citation exacte à la fin, avant de laisser la musique de déconstruire vers le silence, une allusion au monde utopique évoqué dans le texte. Il s'agit également d'un hommage aux œuvres symphoniques de Kurt Weill, dans un langage loin du cabaret, mais non sans le même sardonisme mordant.

This Prelude and Fugue was written in 2016. A chromatic theme announced at the outset is subjected to four different types of variations that are increasingly aggressive and dissonant in style eventually terminating in a series of clusters before subsiding into a bleak restatement of the initial theme. Fuga Remollescenda might be translated from Latin as “wilting flight” which seemed a fitting description for the Fugue's construction. Rather than referring to polyphonic imitation, “flight” signifies escape from the Prelude's vision of a forlorn world. The Fugue begins traditionally but soon each voice deflects from consonant harmony by slipping down a semitone almost every five notes. Ostensibly in A Minor, the Fugue's home key is only ever heard at the beginning and very end.

Ce Prélude et Fugue fut composé en 2016. Le Prélude est construit sur une figure mélodique chromatique exposée dès les premières notes, qui, variée de quatre manières différentes, dans une intensité de plus en plus dissonante et violente, aboutit à une envolée de clusters, et conclut par une réitération résignée du motif initial. La Fuga Remollescenda, ou "fuite ramollissante" en latin, décrit la méthode par laquelle la Fugue fut composée. Le terme "fuite", ici, ne fait pas référence au système de polyphonie imitative mais à l’utilisation de l’ironie afin d’échapper au monde sans espoir du Prélude. Commençant comme une fugue traditionnelle, rapidement chaque voix, indépendamment l’une de l'autre dans une fuite de la consonance, est transposée d’un demi-ton vers le bas, quasiment toutes les 5 notes. Ce n'est qu'au début et à la toute fin que l’auditeur peut entendre que la Fugue est, plus ou moins, en La mineur.

Rather than referring to polyphonic imitation, “flight” signifies escape from the Prelude's vision of a forlorn world. The Fugue begins traditionally but soon each voice deflects from consonant harmony by slipping down a semitone almost every five notes. Ostensibly in A Minor, the Fugue's home key is only ever heard at the beginning and very end.

This short piece follows Louis Couperin's Unmeasured Preludes' modo operandi, in particular those which insert a fugal dance at the heart of the piece. The performer has the responsibility of generating the rhythm as he or she wishes, according to appropriate rhetorical intentions.

Within a traditional three-movement structure, the musical discourse combines the lyrical and expressive properties of the violin with a somewhat classical approach to counterpoint and polyphony. Exploration of the various facets of metamorphosis is a recurring theme throughout Orlando Bass' compositions.

Two simultaneous progressions can be traced throughout the Sonata. The first expresses a metamorphosis of character through different playing techniques. The opening movement features a diverse and extroverted style of violin-playing, followed by a mellifluous and mostly muted central movement that gives way to a monochrome-sounding fugue where one forgoes the bow altogether. The second progression is a metamorphosis in the nature of the melodic material. One single immovable three-note motif is repeatedly hammered out in the ever-changing landscape of the erratic first movement. This motif becomes a clearly-pronounced theme in the second movement, eventually blending into the background before dissolving into pulverised fragments, coalescing into the chromatic sinuosities of the closing fugue.

From discord to unity, from violence to resignation, from anger to depression, the disparate threads of this Sonata intertwine: chaos falling settling into order.

La métamorphose sous ses différentes manifestations est un thème récurrent dans les compositions d'Orlando Bass.

Deux progressions simultanées forment une colonne vertébrale à la Sonate. La première décrit une métamorphose du caractère à travers différentes techniques de jeu. L’écriture variée et extravertie du mouvement initial est suivie d’un mouvement central mélodique au son mat et étouffé, et à la fin laisse la place à une fugue monochrome où l’on renonce complètement à l’archet. La seconde progression traduit la métamorphose progressive du matériau mélodique. Un unique motif immuable de trois notes est régulièrement martelé, une balise dans l’instable paysage dépeint par le premier mouvement. Ce motif, subtilement transformé, devient un thème clairement chanté dans le deuxième mouvement, qui finit par se fondre dans l’arrière-plan avant de se dissoudre en fragments pulvérisés, condensé dans les sinueux contours chromatiques de la fugue finale.

De la discorde à l’unité, de la violence à la résignation, de la colère à la dépression, les fils s’entrelacent et tissent une Sonate où le chaos se  transforme en ordre.

The former is called Variations Géologiques, where the author Paul-Armand Gette adopted musical principles to create a Theme and Variations from a text. The music in turn imitates the literary adaptation of these variation processes, after having generated a theme by illustrating extremely literally and figuratively the initial text. The latter is a slightly-more-narrative-but-no-less-absurd text intended as a libretto for an operatic ballet. The music imitates increasingly older styles, as if it were digging into the rich sedimentary strata deposited by musical history.

Dans un second temps, un texte plus narratif mais non moins absurde à vocation de livret pour un ballet opératique est illustré par une musique qui imite des styles de plus en plus anciens, comme si l'on creusait dans les strates sédimentaires déposées par l'histoire musicale.
